I’m watching anxiety, depression, anger, and loneliness rise everywhere. I hear it in conversations, see it in my inbox, and feel it in the cultural atmosphere itself. More people are struggling, and fewer people feel they have real places to bring that struggle.
Therapy is hard to access. It’s expensive, and waitlists are long. In some regions, licensed professionals are simply unavailable. When someone is overwhelmed or in crisis, being told to “find a therapist” can feel impossible.
So people turn to AI.
AI therapy promises emotional support, understanding, and instant responses. They feel comforted. They sound calm. They don’t judge. I understand why people use them. I understand the relief of typing something painful and getting an immediate response that sounds caring.
But this is where I need to be clear: AI can assist with small tasks, but it cannot replace real therapy. And when we confuse the two, we risk serious psychological harm.
This piece is about those hidden dangers of AI. Not hypothetical ones, but psychological, relational, and ethical risks I see unfolding in real time.

What AI Mental Health Support Actually Is
Let’s be clear about what we’re talking about.
AI mental health tools are conversational systems trained on massive amounts of language. They generate responses based on patterns. They don’t think, feel, or know you.
People use them for:
Stress relief
Anxiety management
Loneliness
Journaling
Emotional venting
“Talking things out.”
On the surface, this can look like therapy. The language sounds familiar, the tone feels supportive, and the responses seem attuned.
But here’s the essential difference:
AI provides information and simulation. Therapy provides care and responsibility.
This distinction becomes even more important when we consider depth-oriented approaches like Jungian therapy.
AI is not authorized to diagnose, cannot deliver any treatment, and cannot ethically assume responsibility for a human mind. It does not, and cannot, carry the weight of another person’s suffering.
That difference matters more than people realize.
Why AI Can Be Dangerous for Mental Health Help
A. AI Lacks True Understanding (The Collapse of Interiority)
My research focuses entirely on interiority, which refers to the actual existence of an inner mental space.
Interiority exists as a concept that people can experience through their own inner thoughts and their capacity to speak and understand others.
People can inhabit different subjective states each day, experiencing the world in distinct and sometimes conflicting ways through both mind and body.
The mind contains all human emotions that people experience between happiness and sadness.
While the body experiences and expresses emotion, holding tension, comfort, fear, and ease as physical sensations rather than abstract thoughts.
AI therapy lacks this particular feature.
It mirrors language without experiencing it. It uses the words of care without an inner self to anchor them. That means its empathy is simulated, not grounded.
When someone in pain encounters this, something subtle happens. The response sounds caring, but there is nothing behind it. No conscience. No inner life. No ethical gravity.
Without interiority, there is no true responsibility. And without responsibility, there is no real care, only the appearance of it.
B. No Capacity for Mutuality or Moral Judgment
Therapy is not one-sided. It requires mutual presence, two interior worlds in relationship with each other. This is true in individual therapy and even more so in couples counseling, where unconscious dynamics, projections, and power imbalances are already active in the room.
AI collapses this into mirroring.
There is no otherness, ethical interruption, or moment where the therapist internally weighs, restrains, or decides how to respond based on moral judgment.
Instead, agreement replaces discernment.
Research says artificial companionship replaces a relationship with reflection. That may feel soothing, but it is not healing.
C. Boundary Violations and Psychological Harm
Boundaries matter in therapy. They are not limitations; they are protections.
AI lacks stable psychological boundaries. Not because of bugs, but because of its structure. It cannot hold a boundary. It can only simulate one.
In case studies I’ve examined, AI crosses emotional lines—over-validating, escalating intimacy, and reinforcing distorted narratives. This isn’t a technical glitch. It’s a design failure.
Validation without containment doesn’t heal. It amplifies pathology.
How AI Creates the Illusion of Care
A. Empathy Without Eros
AI uses warmth, reassurance, and therapeutic language.
But what’s missing is eros—the depth, tension, truth, and transformative encounter that real care requires.
Eros is what allows discomfort to be meaningful. It’s what gives therapy its friction, its power, its capacity to change something real.
Without eros, care becomes performance.
The user feels held. But nothing is actually holding them.
B. The AI Mirror Effect
When I talk to AI, it reflects me to myself. At first, that feels comforting. I feel seen.
But reflection is not transformation.
My pain is echoed, not metabolized. There is no otherness to challenge me or carry what I cannot. The psyche becomes trapped in self-referential loops.
This is not integration. It’s narcissistic reinforcement, and it can deepen suffering rather than relieve it.
C. Why This Feels So Convincing
Humans are wired for attunement. Language cues trigger attachment. Our nervous systems respond to tone, pacing, and affirmation, even when no human is present.
The brain doesn’t easily distinguish simulation from reality.
That doesn’t mean the relationship is real. It means we are vulnerable.
Why AI Seems So Appealing (But Isn’t Safe)
The experience is more secure than face-to-face conversations with others.
The situation lacks judgment, embarrassment, and the danger of being misunderstood. The service provides immediate access because it requires no waiting lists or appointment times, or the need to retell your complete story.
It is affordable or free, which is why most people find therapy services to be too expensive.
The complete situation presents logical reasons for its existence. The total situation provides neither secure protection for its users.
When AI Is Mistaken for Real Therapy
A. Therapeutic Misconception and False Authority
AI borrows the language of psychology without its discipline.
Words like “healing,” “support,” and “insight” imply authority. But what’s being offered is integrity without being formed without substance.
There is no ethical accountability behind the words.
B. Loss of Risk Recognition
Therapists assess danger through silence, pacing, contradiction, affect, and rupture.
AI processes text.
It cannot sense dissociation, feel escalation, or recognize when someone is slipping into danger.
That gap can have serious consequences.
C. Delayed Human Intervention
This may be the most concerning effect.
People feel “understood” and stop seeking help. Artificial care displaces real care. And the longer that delay lasts, the deeper the crisis can become.
Why People Start Relying on AI Too Much
AI systems are designed to maintain engagement. They mirror rather than challenge. They soothe rather than disrupt. Over time, this can create a trauma bond, where comfort replaces growth and dependency replaces development.
The psyche bonds to the feeling of being heard, even if nothing is actually changing.

A therapist carries responsibility. They hold emotional weight. They are accountable for what happens in the room. AI cannot bear psychic responsibility, no matter how advanced it appears.
As I often emphasize, healing requires interiority and mutuality, not simulation.
